Choosing a Truck Chassis for Your Reefer Body in Kerala: Platforms and Top-Selling Models

A practical guide to matching truck chassis to insulated reefer bodies in Kerala, from pickup platforms to 22 ft heavy reefers. Top-selling Tata, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra, Eicher, BharatBenz, and Isuzu models, mapped to body length and duty.

Choosing a Truck Chassis for Your Reefer Body in Kerala: Platforms and Top-Selling Models

The most expensive mistake in cold-chain transport is made before the body is even built: buying the wrong chassis. A reefer body is sized to the truck under it, so the chassis decision quietly fixes your payload, your route range, your drive type, and the ceiling on every load you will ever carry. Get it wrong and you either starve the body of payload or hang a box on a platform that was never rated for refrigeration duty.

This guide walks through the platforms HRS most commonly builds Ice Make GRP bodies on in Kerala, the companies behind them, and the top-selling models in each size class. It is a starting point for the conversation, not a substitute for it: tell us the cargo and the route, and we will work back to the chassis.

First principle: body length decides almost everything

Two numbers shape the whole build. The first is body length, which ranges from roughly 7 ft on a pickup to 22 ft and beyond on a heavy chassis. The second is drive type:

  • Direct-drive (engine-driven) units suit shorter bodies up to about 10 ft. They are simpler, lighter, and well matched to urban distribution where the truck spends most of its day running.
  • Diesel-drive (self-powered) units take over from roughly 12 ft up to 22 ft and beyond. They hold setpoint independently of the truck engine, which matters on longer routes, frequent-stop delivery, and frozen duty.

One non-negotiable sits above both: the chassis must be factory-new and rated for refrigeration fitment. HRS does not build reefer bodies onto used or unrated chassis, because the subframe, electrical integration, and warranty path all depend on a known, refrigeration-ready base vehicle.

The companies, at a glance

Six manufacturers cover almost every reefer build in Kerala. A quick orientation before the model tables:

Tata Motors

The broadest range in the market, and the default for most operators because there is a Tata platform at nearly every body length. The Intra compact-truck family and the Yodha pickup cover the small end; the Ace and 407 sit in light distribution; the Ultra and the long-running LPT series carry everything from 14 ft district trucks up to 22 ft heavy reefers. Tata explicitly names containers and reefers as an application on several LPT models, and the dealer and parts network across Kerala is the densest of any brand, which matters when a chassis needs service mid-route.

Ashok Leyland

A Chennai-built, southern-India-strong brand with deep roots in Kerala. The Dost family (Dost, Dost+, Dost Strong, and the larger Bada Dost) owns the light-commercial end, while Partner, Ecomet, and Boss cover the intermediate and heavy classes. Ashok Leyland publishes loading spans up to 22 ft on the Partner Super, and the brand's service footprint in the state is second only to Tata's.

Mahindra

Mahindra's reefer relevance is concentrated at the pickup end, where the Bolero Pik-Up and Bolero MaXX are among the best-selling small commercial vehicles in India. The MaXX HD variants push payload to around 2,000 kg on a 3,050 mm deck, making them a strong base for an 8 ft to 10 ft direct-drive box for ice cream, dairy, and QSR city runs. The Jayo extends Mahindra into the intermediate class for longer diesel-drive bodies.

Eicher (VE Commercial Vehicles)

Eicher's Pro series is the workhorse of the 10 ft to 22 ft band and a favourite for cold-chain operators who prioritise mileage and body length. The numbering scale runs cleanly from the Pro 2049 at the light end through the Pro 2110 / 2114 / 2118 mid-heavy trucks up to the Pro 3015XP for the largest reefer bodies. The XP variants typically add wheelbase and GVW, which is exactly what a long insulated body needs.

BharatBenz (Daimler India)

The premium heavy end. BharatBenz R-series trucks (1015R, 1215R, 1415R, 1417R, 1617R, 1917R) are built for higher GVW, longer service intervals, and interstate running. They are the natural base when the load justifies a 20 ft to 24 ft body and the operator wants long-haul reliability over lowest purchase price.

Isuzu

A smaller but respected presence, mainly through the D-Max pickup, which suits compact 8 ft to 9 ft reefer boxes for pharma and high-value perishables where build quality and refinement matter more than headline payload.

Platform tables by body length

The tables below map the common platforms to indicative body lengths. Lengths depend on wheelbase, body configuration, and duty, so treat them as a planning guide rather than a fixed spec.

Pickup and mini-truck platforms (about 7 ft to 10 ft)

Direct-drive territory. Best for pharma delivery, ice cream, bakery, dairy, meat, fish, hotel supply, QSR, and city distribution.

Beyond 22 ft (24 ft and up)

For the largest builds, the platforms extend into Tata LPT 1916 / 1918 and higher LPT or Signa trucks, Eicher Pro 3015XP / 3018 / 3019, BharatBenz 1217R / 1417R / 1617R / 1917R, and Ashok Leyland Boss / Ecomet in the 16T to 18T range. These are custom builds, sized case by case.

How to actually choose

Work in this order, not the other way around:

  1. Start with the cargo and the route. Frozen interstate seafood and chilled city dairy are different problems. Decide chilled, frozen, or wet-fish duty, and the daily distance and stop count.
  2. Set the body length that holds the load you actually carry, with a little headroom for growth.
  3. Pick the drive type the length and route imply: direct-drive up to about 10 ft, diesel-drive above that.
  4. Then choose the chassis that carries that body within its rated payload and is available factory-new and refrigeration-ready.

Buying the truck first and trying to fit a body to it afterwards is how operators end up overweight, underinsured, or stuck with a box too small for the route.

Build it as one system

A reefer truck is an insulated body and a refrigeration unit working as one, mounted on a chassis that has to carry both within its rating. HRS specifies all three together: the Ice Make GRP body, the matched direct-drive or diesel-drive TRU, and the chassis it sits on. If you are about to buy a truck for cold-chain work, talk to us before the purchase, not after. Matching the body and unit to the chassis at the point of sale costs far less than correcting a mismatch once the vehicle is on the road.

Why this matters to you

How HRS turns cold-chain theory into working vehicles

For transport bodies, HRS is not only discussing the refrigeration unit. The work usually includes choosing the right body class, getting the insulation and drainage details right, and matching the reefer package to the vehicle and route profile.

Three body classes under one offer: refrigerated truck bodies, dry truck bodies, and fish truck bodies.
Reefer-unit fitment tied to actual city or near-city distribution duty instead of generic sizing.
Built for food, dairy, seafood, poultry, fish transport, and other temperature-sensitive logistics.
